During this extensive work-up I perform an examination of the oral cavity and all teeth one by one – the general anaesthesia enables me to do so without causing discomfort or pain. A dental chart is filled out: all relevant indices, the state of the gums, the signs of inflammation, the visible masses, the injuries on the tooth crowns, the signs of periodontal disease are thoroughly documented. With the help of the periodontal probe the gingival sulcus is measured on 6 sites around all teeth. After charting and probing the plaque and calculus is being removed and all teeth are polished. It is possible only then to take diagnostic dental radiographs, because calculus appears as disturbing artifact on the images. The summarized results of the conscious examination and the evaluation under general anaesthesia are needed in order to determine the best treatment options for the individual patient and client.
